AI has crossed a threshold inside enterprises. It is no longer treated as optional innovation or an isolated pilot. It is now becoming baseline operating infrastructure. A clear signal is leadership's acknowledgment of AI's value, reflected in company AI offsites where leaders and operators align on tooling, workflows, governance, and execution standards. I have personally been involved in many AI programs while at Hims & Hers, including my self-created Embrace AI council, AI brown bags, and knowledge-sharing sessions where I taught team members how to use Cursor to automate routine tasks. I also serve as an internal expert helping teams clarify what they want to do, what is technically feasible, and how to execute it. That work extends across corporate offsites, leadership conferences, webinars, audiobooks, and continued experimentation through application development.
That shift matters for marketing teams because every function now has pressure to automate repetitive work, move faster, and standardize output quality. Individual experimentation is valuable, but real enterprise value comes when experiments become prototypes, prototypes become workflows, and those workflows are reusable, maintainable, scalable, and agile enough to keep pace with rapidly changing technology across the full stack, from CRM activation to CDP-driven audience intelligence. A clear example from my own work was building an AI-assisted QA workflow with automation and scripts that reduced campaign QA time from about one hour to just minutes (a 95% time reduction), increased overall output by 66%, and improved quality by 50%.

- Reusable skills and workflows: centralize high-value skills in a managed workflow catalog, then expose them as configurable templates so teams reuse proven patterns instead of rebuilding one-off solutions.
From Individual Prompts to Team Workflows
Most teams start by using AI to accelerate personal tasks. That is step one. Step two is codifying winning patterns into workflows that deliver consistent outcomes for anyone on the team.
This is where the distinction between generative AI and agentic AI becomes practical. Generative AI helps produce artifacts quickly. Agentic AI, when designed with constraints and clear inputs, helps execute repeatable workflows. In execution terms, this is the shift from one-off prompting to durable LLM/GPT systems that support NLP tasks like summarization, classification, and content adaptation. The goal is an AI-native operating model where experiments become prototypes, prototypes become production workflows, and production workflows stay reusable, maintainable, and adaptable as models and tools evolve.

As AI adoption matures, a new expectation is emerging inside MarTech organizations: someone has to own the lifecycle of AI-enabled workflows from design through maintenance. This includes the data path (ETL and reverse ETL), the integration path (API, webhook, MCP), and the activation path (CRM and channel systems). This is increasingly a marketing engineering function.
The role sits at the intersection of marketing strategy, operations, architecture, systems design, and software logic. It translates business needs into reusable skills, workflow templates, and integration architecture patterns that teams can trust.
Core responsibilities include:
- Defining reusable AI workflows and architecture patterns for recurring use cases.
- Designing LLM and GPT application patterns tied to business outcomes.
- Implementing RAG pipelines that connect models to governed enterprise context.
- Orchestrating integration layers across APIs, webhooks, MCPs, and reverse ETL paths.
- Operationalizing feedback loops equivalent to RLHF through experimentation programs.
- Driving adoption so no-tech and technical marketers can use the same trusted systems.
Architecture Turns AI Into Operations
The technical pattern is straightforward: models reason, systems execute, teams govern. When this is done well, AI moves from impressive demos to dependable delivery. When it is done poorly, teams get fragmented tools, conflicting methods, and inconsistent outcomes.
The role of marketing engineering is to keep that architecture coherent over time so new model capabilities can be adopted without breaking workflow quality, compliance expectations, or team velocity.
Governance Is a Feature, Not Overhead
Questions about AI tool access controls, integration approvals, and platform limitations are signs of healthy maturity, not blockers. These limits are important: they define what can run automatically, what requires review, and how teams can move quickly without creating unnecessary risk.
The strongest teams are not the ones with zero guardrails. They are the ones with clear guardrails, clear ownership, and clear runbooks while still staying agile enough to pivot when priorities shift or technology changes. In practice, this means bringing AI delivery into the same rigor as SOX-aligned controls, applying NIST CSF 2.0 security thinking, and using NIST AI RMF principles (govern, map, measure, manage) so innovation and risk management move together.
This also includes first-class handling of sensitive data domains such as PII and PHI, plus deliberate XFN collaboration across marketing, engineering, analytics, legal, and security.
A Practical Team-Level Model
If every contributor creates separate workflows for the same task, scale breaks quickly. This creates fragmentation: one business outcome spread across disconnected tools, methods, owners, and documents. In day-to-day work, fragmentation shows up as duplicated effort and inconsistent output quality. At the team and role level, it creates confusion about job ownership and decision rights. In documentation, it produces conflicting runbooks, stale instructions, and unclear standards that slow onboarding and make systems harder to maintain across SaaS platforms.
A stronger model is to centralize foundational workflows in marketing engineering, then expose them as configurable templates for the broader team.
